NHTSA’s official stars stay labeled as NHTSA ratings. We preserve overall, frontal, side, rollover and available occupant-level results. A feature list is never turned into a crash-test score.
Compare overall and frontal ratings only within the same vehicle class and within 250 pounds of curb weight.
New and materially changed inventory enters the report queue automatically. Active reports are due for refresh every 24 hours. A source outage keeps the last confirmed crash rating and its original date; it does not create a new verification.
An unrated configuration still gets a report with the available safety features. We use an earlier test only if the testing organization explicitly applies it to this model year and configuration, including build-date and equipment restrictions.
Equipment is organized into occupant protection, crash avoidance, stability and braking, visibility, parking and reversing, and child/passenger safety. Optional equipment and dealer claims remain labeled. Actual installation and condition should be confirmed.
An Autorrive score requires a complete matched NHTSA record and a permitted independent assessment covering at least three crashworthiness tests, pedestrian and vehicle crash prevention, and headlights. Unresolved trim/build restrictions prevent scoring. Source grades remain visible alongside the score.
The editorial weighting is 30% NHTSA overall, 40% independent crashworthiness, 20% crash prevention and 10% headlights. Independent grades map to G=5, A=4, M=2 and P=1. We round down to a half star. A one-point crash result caps the total at two stars; two points cap it at three; three points cap it at four. This is an editorial comparison, not a validated estimate of injury risk.
Annual picks require at least five distinct models in the same model year, vehicle category, comparable weight group and test-protocol year, with complete scores for at least 80% of that catalog group. Qualifiers need at least 4.5 stars, no included crash or prevention result below four points, adequate headlights, and no reported NHTSA safety concern. Unrated vehicles, inferred scores and unresolved applicability do not qualify. Coverage describes our catalog, not every vehicle sold in the U.S.
Investigations, service bulletins and recall counts do not determine stars. A current exact-VIN recall result is reported separately; model-level data is never presented as this vehicle’s unrepaired recalls.
