00:00 — Horsepower is not a tow rating

The most powerful 2025 Ram 1500 is not automatically the best choice for your trailer. A luxury truck can accelerate strongly while leaving less room for passengers, cargo, and hitch load. That is why engine power and usable working capacity need two different comparisons.

00:20 — Know which Hurricane you are buying

Ram offered Standard Output and High Output versions of the Hurricane engine for this model year. Their published outputs are 420, and 540 horsepower. Those figures describe power. They do not tell you the actual payload remaining in a truck with particular options and passengers.

00:42 — The model-line tow ceilings differ

Ram's published maximum trailer rating is higher for the Standard Output Hurricane: 11,550 pounds, compared with 9,920 for High Output. These are configuration maximums, not permission to tow that amount with any truck carrying the engine badge.

Use the loading label on the specific Ram, then account for people, cargo, added equipment, and trailer tongue weight. Confirm its cab, bed, axle, receiver, and factory towing equipment. The loaded trailer matters more than its empty brochure weight. Check combined and axle limits as well as the headline trailer rating.

If you want High Output for its performance and luxury, that can be a valid choice. Just make it after proving the truck can handle your actual work. Compare tires, fuel, insurance, and service costs too. A lower-powered Ram with the right configuration may be the stronger purchase for a towing household.
