00:00 — Four Checks Before the Used-Car Deal Is Done
A used car can look perfect on a short drive and still be the wrong deal. Work in four passes. Before the visit, save the listing, get the vehicle identification number, check open recalls, and request a written out-the-door quote. At the car, match that number to the paperwork. Look at tire wear, warning lights, leaks, electronics, and the equipment promised in the ad. Drive on the roads you actually use, long enough to notice braking, steering, shifts, and behavior after warm-up. Next, review service records, history information, warranty terms, and the dealer's Buyers Guide. A clean history report is useful but cannot prove that nothing happened. Finally, separate the car's price from trade and financing. Check every fee and optional product, then compare annual percentage rate, term, amount financed, and total payments. At delivery, match the final contract to the quote and collect keys, signed copies, and any promises of later work in writing. You do not need to remember it all in the showroom. Bring a checklist and pause whenever a fact or number does not match.
