A sport utility vehicle can advertise plenty of cargo space and still fail your everyday loading test. The problem often starts with comparing maximum volume while forgetting the passengers. If the rear seats stay occupied, the useful number is the space behind those seats, along with the shape of the opening.

Start with your normal seating arrangement. Bring the stroller, mobility device, dog crate, or work case that is hardest to fit. Check the hatch opening, load floor, and height as well as the published volume. A wide box may be difficult to load even when its calculated volume looks small enough.
