The Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4 are sensible places to begin a compact-SUV reliability search. The Toyota Highlander belongs on the list when you need more seating. RepairPal's model-wide scores support considering these vehicles, but they do not establish that every year, engine or individual example is equally dependable.

That distinction matters below a $20,000 advertised price. You are comparing used vehicles with different mileages, histories and amounts of overdue work. A good model can still be a poor purchase if the particular car has been neglected.

Figures checked September 20, 2026. RepairPal uses repair cost, frequency and severity in its rating. These averages cover multiple model years. They are not quotes for repairs in 2026, annual spending limits or guarantees for a particular vehicle. They also exclude other ownership costs, such as fuel, insurance and depreciation.

A half-star difference should help prioritize your research. It should not persuade you to ignore a leak, a warning light or missing maintenance documentation.

CR-V and CX-5: the same score, different buying questions

For the 2018 CR-V, identify the engine and trim before comparing listings. Honda's specifications show that the LX uses a different engine from the turbocharged EX and higher trims. The engine determines which specifications and maintenance requirements apply.

Reason to shortlist the CR-V: A strong model-wide RepairPal score and useful space for passengers and luggage.

Keep gas and hybrid examples separate in the comparison. If you choose a hybrid instead, add inspection of its hybrid system and the relevant records rather than applying this gas-model shopping checklist unchanged.

Highlander: consider it for seating, not just its score

The 2017 Highlander belongs here if a third row is useful to you. Its model-wide RepairPal score is favorable, but a three-row SUV still needs to justify its size in your routine.

Pros: Extra seating and a favorable model-wide RepairPal score.

Cons: A low advertised price may come with substantial mileage or overdue servicing. Have the inspector assess the exact engine, transmission, driveline and service schedule. Then get an estimate for any repairs or servicing before comparing the total cost with that of a smaller SUV.

Why the Forester is a conditional choice

The Forester's 3.5/5 score and higher published repair-cost average make it a less obvious starting point when repair cost is your main priority. It may still suit you if you need its particular capabilities and an independent inspection finds it in good condition.
